Notes from ¿Qué tal? - Saber and Conocer

Two Spanish verbs express to know: saber and conocer.
  • Saber means to know facts or pieces of information. When followed by an infinitive, saber means to know how to do something (or to be able to do something).

  • No sabemos el telefono de Alejandro. ¿Saben Uds. dónde vive Alejandro? ¿Saben llegar alli? – We don't know Alejandros phone number Do you know where Alejandro lives? Do you know how to get there?
  • Conocer means to know or to be acquainted (familiar) with a person, place, or thing. It can also mean to meet.
  • No conocen a la nueva estudiante todavia. – They don't know the new student yet.
    ¿Conocen Uds. el restaurante mexicano en Ia calle Goya? – Are you familiar with (Have you been to) the Mexican restaurant on Goya Street?
    ¿Quieres conocer a aquel joven? – Do you want to meet that young man?
    Ya lo conocí. Se llama Rafael. – I've already met him. His name is Rafael.
